c'est tout.

Hello out there!

It has been a very long while since I've written here. And it is after much deliberation that I have finally decided that it's time to wrap up the HvH Interiors story.

I will no longer be publishing blog posts here, but I will keep the blog live anyways. I find myself referring to it often for inspiration or information - so if not just for myself, maybe some of you out there can still make use of it.

Starting this blog has propelled me into a world I didn't even know existed. And through it, I developed my interior style, got some opportunities to work on some eDesign projects, and met super amazing people. For these reasons, it is a project I will always cherish.

THANK YOU to all of you who have supported this blog by reading and sharing your comments on my posts. I am so deeply grateful for that and it has definitely made this whole experience even more fulfilling than I could have imagined.

But don't worry, I will not be disappearing completely from the blogging world. You will still find me posting over at We Heart Home and The Design Chef (after a bit of construction). I also have a few new projects lined up so you can follow me on my social channels to keep up to date.

Very best wishes!

Xx. Holly.

Touring a Sweet Shop in Berlin (pt.1/2)

Happy Monday guys! Today and tomorrow we're going to do something a little different here at HvH Interiors. I'm going to take you on tours of two charming Berlin shops.

I originally prepared these posts for a different project, but it turns out they won't be being used for it. So instead of letting them go to waste, I thought to share them with you.

Guess what!? ...

... I was awarded a Liebster Blog Award by Igor over at Happy Interior Blog! I'm so happy and touched by this gesture - primarily because it's my first blog award ever (!!) and it was awarded by one of my liebster bloggers :)

Translated to English from German, "liebster" means "favourite" or "beloved". The point of the award is to support and appreciate smaller blogs. Once you receive such an award, you must thank the blogger who gave you the award and provide a link to their site on your blog. Then choose 5 of your liebster blogs (must have less than 200 followers) and contact them to tell them so. They, in turn, will follow the same procedure. And the love just keeps on spreading. Nice, right?

So I am passing the Liebster Blog Award to ... (drum roll please) ...

- Keeping Up with the Charlebois
- ColourLiving
- Zum Verlieben
- Sister Mag Blog
- Happy Impermanence

I chose these blogs because they have very lovely and inspiring people behind them and it makes me happy to share them with you.

Have a great start to the week. I know I sure did :)

Xx. Holly.

... not too much, but just enough.

via

I have been a bit out of sorts these days, seeking a little thing called balance. I would like to share some thoughts with you here, since we have known each other for some time now.  I think it's time to get personal a bit. Here we go.

Since my husband P and I relocated to Germany from Canada, life has been quite exciting. I've acquired a new language (still in the process, ha!), adapted to a new culture and am adjusting to life away from family and friends. As if that wasn't exciting enough, P and I have both changed our career paths during this time. He went from a vague path in architecture studies to fulfilling his childhood dream of being a pilot. I went from a psychology graduate with a specialization in neuroscience to interior design consultant, writer, blogger.  We are very happy about our decisions. That's not to say it wasn't hard to change directions in a new environment. We've overcome many challenges and there are many more to come, I'm sure. I'm also sure many of you can relate as well.

I am enjoying my work a lot. Everyday involves research and discovery and writing about things related to interior design - something I am quite passionate about. Everyday I am meeting new and inspiring people via this wonderful blog-o-sphere I have recently become a part of. I get to share my knowledge with clients and through consultations. I also acquire new knowledge everyday - which is great because sharing and life-long learning are things I value very much. That my job allows this is a truly wonderful thing. As a freelancer, I also love the amount of control I have over my work and the flexibility that comes along with it. Since I do most of my work online, I am not really limited to a specific geographical location either. Which is the founding concept behind HvH Interiors - my focus is to provide interior e-design services to anyone, anywhere.

But too much openness, too much flexibility, too much of anything really is not good.  And this is what I have been struggling with these days - the lack of structure in my life at the moment.

As much as I have loved working from home and sometimes from cute cafes, I couldn't do it any longer. Something wasn't right. I wasn't being as productive as I wanted and that was making me upset. Consequently, it was interfering with the joy my work brings me. I was feeling lonely and isolated at home all day. So I went out to cafes more often. But even though I was surrounded by people and activity, ultimately I was still alone. I couldn't leave my computer and all my stuff unattended at a cafe table and go outside for a little break, a walk, a change of ideas for a moment. I couldn't really turn to my neighbour and say, "Hey, what's going on? What are you up to today?" People would think I was a bit nutty ... maybe. However,I do believe people are lonelier than they seem, so some may have appreciated that. Anyways...

As an interior designer, someone who values the effectiveness of our environments, I felt it was time to look for a different environment. I started looking for shared work spaces where I could potentially rent a desk for a month. Berlin is full of these "co-working" spaces so it didn't take long to find the perfect little spot. It's a small, charming office. The people I work along side are very nice and we share the same working lifestyle of freelance creatives. I can't say how happy I am here in my new environment. Here's a little sneak peak.

via my Instagram

See my desk there on the left hand corner? I am directly facing a big window at street level, so I have a wonderful view. I have one person behind me and two other desks on my right. Fantastich, oder?

So yes, I am happy with this arrangement. I have a designated place to work, where I can focus. However, if I like, I have the freedom of staying home and working from the coziness of my sofa - because that's so nice too sometimes. But I've learned that for me, it's only nice when there is an alternative. I need balance. I don't like to be one way or other; I like to have options so that I may always create this balance for myself. And I don't only have this philosophy when it comes to my work, but I also like to apply it to my personal life as well. And I can tell you, I am looking forward to a time when that will be a little more balanced too. Right now, due to the nature of P's studies, we are spending a lot of time apart, we are moving around a lot, we don't know where we will be settling in the near future; life is kind of up in the air. And while I realize that this can be and ultimately is fun, I am looking forward to a little more stability ... not too much though, but just enough ;)

If you've read this far along, thank you for taking the time to read my rant. Can you relate to some of what I've been talking about? Please do feel free to share some of your own ideas and experiences, I do love to hear your stories too.

But wait...

The day would not be compete without a little interior design inspiration, you say?  You are right. So I leave you, appropriately, with some lovely images of office spaces.

Holiday Break

via
Dear Lovely Readers,

The holidays are upon us.  A time to be with family and spread that holiday cheer. Which is exactly what I am doing.  I have to excuse myself for being away from my blog here for a while - but my dad had a serious emergency heart procedure last week, so things have been hectic, crazy and stressful.  I flew in a couple of days after the procedure and my sister and I are taking good care of him.  His recovery is going well, thank goodness - he gave us quite a scare.  But he pulled through the operation like a champ.  I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas present than that.

In that spirit, I would like to wish you all a happy and especially healthy holiday season - Be safe and be merry!

And I leave you with a few holiday related links for your enjoyment:

- extravagant designer Christmas trees - created to raise money for a children's cancer charity.
- amazing gift wrapping!
- wonderfully decorated Christmas home.
- another wonderfully decorated Christmas home.
- more Christmas decor inspiration - black, white and metallic rustic scheme.
- very sweet Christmas decor ideas and mini tree decor craft project to try.
- Christmas tree mobile - non traditional, DIY, could be really stunning!

tiny announcement...

The first day of December. The holidays are fast approaching, and so is the new year.  You can feel it in the air. People seem to be bustling about as opposed to just walking around. Every one seems busy, with lots of things to do and plan.  I am among them.

Which is why I would like to let those who follow here know that I will be away from my blog until about Tuesday next week.  See you on Facebook or Twitter and wishing you all well 'till then.

Modern/Contemporary 3D interior project

Remember, I shared a modern/contemporary moodboard yesterday? Well, here is the 3D interior project I was working on that goes with it.  I think it's pretty much complete, except for the brick wall texture ... I just can't seem to find the right one.  The brick here is way too big, but the colours are right so I kept it.  The project entailed the ground floor only.  It is an open concept space which required the kitchen, dining, living and working areas to co-exist.

I chose a neutral colour scheme - white, black, grey and went two ways with the browns - one more influenced by yellow, the other by red.  The result is a space that has balance when it comes to light and dark colours.  The white and light colours further enhance the already abundant amount of light in the space, allowing for the addition of some seriously rich colours and textures (the couches, the wood floor) to cozy up the place in an elegant way. There is a straight line theme to the interior by way of the furniture choices and rug patterns - although the chandelier of floating spheres at various heights (inspired by the ones at Bocci) was chosen as a fun contrast and is used to emphasize the height of the space, while simultaneously tying them together.  The chandelier plays a role and can be appreciated on either level.

So ... care to share some thoughts, comments?  You like? You don't? All are welcome ;)

If you need help with the concept of your space, I'm always happy to dish out some ideas - so do look at the eDesign services page to find out how it works.

See you next time,

What is Beautiful?

As an interior design consultant, my main goal is to help people achieve a space they think is beautiful.  But what may be beautiful to one person, may not be to another.  And here lies the complexity and excitement of the job.

So what is beautiful?  Is it something we think? Something we feel? Something we are conditioned to? I watched this talk on TED this morning and it got me to thinking about beauty, achieving beauty, perceived beauty and most of all, transferring beauty into our surroundings.

What was confirmed by this talk is that beauty is relative.  There is no one way to define it.  You've all heard "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", or "we don't see things as they are, we see them as we are".  And these are so true - that is why not all people think the same things are beautiful.  Thank goodness for that (on so many levels) because otherwise, my job wouldn't exist.  But what is common to defining beauty is the emotional reaction it evokes in an individual.

This notion of "to each his own" is one I live by and believe in strongly. I apply it on many different levels but I also think it helps me immensely in my job as an interior design consultant.  And when I look back I realize that I really learned the importance of this during my studies in psychology.  I was very in love with and involved in the scientific process.  I loved thinking about questions and devising experiments whose results could shed some light on our inquires about human behaviour.  What I learned there, is that so much needs to be said about individual differences, from biological and environmental standpoints equally.  We try to create order by discovering certain patterns that help us understand why things are the way they are, but it's never so black and white.  This is so fascinating to me and ties in so well to my work as a design consultant.  I strive to help people discover what they want in a space. We talk about what they need, what they like, what makes them feel happy - like a mini therapy session ;)  With this information (which is different for each and every one of us) I get to experiment and be inspired to create a space or a concept for a space that is beautiful to that individual.

Of course, there are general guidelines one should consider when designing a space.  This is something I also learned during my studies in interior design, and it struck a familiar chord.  Although there are certain concepts that encourage good design, they can be, and should be adapted to suit the space or the people within the space.  It's all about balance - listening to people's desires, keeping an open mind, using your knowledge and skills, and not being afraid of breaking the rules or abiding by them. I believe this is how one achieves a beautiful space.

On that note, I leave you with some images of interiors I think are beautiful - ones that evoke an emotional reaction from me. Maybe you get it, maybe you don't.  But that's the beauty of it ;) Feel free to comment below.
