Design Elements - examples of dividing space (curtains vs sliding doors)

Many of us may consider an open concept loft a dream space.  But sometimes they are harder to design than spaces with distinct rooms.  Certain issues present themselves, which if not dealt with properly can result in a nightmare space instead.  What is really important when planning an open concept is addressing the issue of privacy, storage and delineating areas while conserving a coherent interior scheme.  There are so many great ways to do this but here are two examples I came across today that use very different strategies - sliding doors vs curtains.

The first is a small loft (70m2) designed by Mode:lina.  They used a system of sliding doors to separate areas.  With this method, the inhabitants have the option to close off a space or open it up depending on their need or mood.  This is a flexible solution that clearly defines one space from another without a permanent structure.  The doors also provide some sound proofing.

On the other hand, Uxus divides this loft by a series of heavy curtains that can be open or closed at will - joining or separating spaces easily.  The curtains have a dramatic effect and suit this space and the eclectic taste of its owners well.

The question is, although curtains can look awesome, is it really a suitable solution for real, everyday life?  I guess it depends largely on what your "every day life" consists of. But I'm assuming most of us would prefer sliding doors.  Maybe curtains in some areas...

Which would you choose?

*update: another interesting space using curtains as dividers.

As for space division, both for practical reasons & aesthetics I really like sliding doors. Let alone the fact that I asked our hand worker to remove the one from the kitchen of our future home!

It looks seriously better. O.k, so long as you do not take into consideration the mess taking place ;)

I love dividing spaces when they are vast & unified, or when there is need. Like in these examples you bring, which are great.

In our simple apartment, anything that can be torn down gives the impression of more space, so it is welcome.

Oh why do I ramble... there will come the time for you to see it. Blink, blink ;)

Wishing you good night & sweet dreams!
